  39. The enclosed DW0644 disk contains HP4.PRD, the driver that provides
  40. support for the Hewlett-Packard(R) (HP) LaserJet 4 printer. This
  41. printer driver is intended for use with Microsoft Word version 5.5 for
  42. MS-DOS only. Any use of the included file with any version of
  43. Microsoft Word earlier than 5.5 is untested, and Microsoft does not
  44. guarantee the results.
  45.  
  46. TO INSTALL SUPPORT FOR THE HP LASERJET 4
  47. ========================================
  48.  
  49. 1. Insert the enclosed DW0644 disk in your floppy disk drive.
  50.  
  51. 2. At the MS-DOS command prompt, type the following and press ENTER
  52.  
  53.       copy <drive>:\hp4.prd <path>
  54.       
  55.    where <drive> is your floppy disk drive and <path> is the location
  56.    of your Word program directory. For example, if the disk is in
  57.    drive A and your Word program directory is on drive C and is called
  58.    WORD5, type the following and press ENTER:
  59.  
  60.       copy a:\hp4.prd c:\word5
  61.       
  62. 3. Start Word 5.5. From the File menu, choose Printer Setup. From the
  63.    Files list, select HP4.PRD. Choose the OK button.
  64.  
  65. Word uses POSTSCRP.PRD to support PostScript(R) printing on LaserJet
  66. printers. For more information, see the "PostScript Printers" section
  67. in Chapter 2 of the "Printer Information for Microsoft Word" manual.

  93. Word and LaserJet Symbol Sets
  94. -----------------------------

  96. Word creates some special fonts to access additional symbol sets. For
  97. example, the CourierPC font is identical to regular Courier but uses
  98. the PC-8 symbol set to support the line draw feature of Word. Fonts
  99. ending in "Legal," such as PrestigeLegal, are identical to fonts
  100. without the suffix, but use the Legal character set, which includes
  101. the copyright symbol, registered trademark symbol, and others. Fonts
  102. ending in "850" use the IBM(R) PC-850 character set, which includes an
  103. expanded set of international characters.
  104.  
  105. Word does not always support every symbol set available. You can
  106. access unsupported symbol sets by using the MergePRD program to modify
  107. your .PRD file. For more information, see Chapter 5, "Using the
  108. MergePRD Program," of the "Printer Information for Microsoft Word"
  109. manual.
  110.  
  111. Adding Support for Fonts
  112. ------------------------
  113.  
  114. Word supports most of the LaserJet fonts currently available, but new
  115. fonts frequently appear on the market. You can add support for any new
  116. LaserJet font using the MergePRD program and the Tagged Font Matrix
  117. (TFM) files supplied by the printer manufacturer. The .TFM files for
  118. new HP fonts are stored on the AutoFont Support disk that comes with
  119. the fonts. For more information, see Chapter 5, "Using the MergePRD
  120. Program," of the "Printer Information for Microsoft Word" manual.
  121.  
  122. Downloading Fonts
  123. -----------------
  124.  
  125. To use downloadable fonts with the downloading program in Word, you
  126. should place the appropriate .PRD file, a .DAT file with the same
  127. filename as the .PRD file, and the font set files in the same
  128. directory (or on the same floppy disk). The .PRD and .DAT files must
  129. be in the same directory. The .DAT file is automatically copied with
  130. the .PRD file when you use Setup to install your printer driver. For
  131. more information on downloading LaserJet fonts, see Chapter 4,
  132. "Downloading Fonts," of the "Printer Information for Microsoft Word"
  133. manual.
  134.  
  135. Landscape Printing
  136. ------------------
  137.  
  138. The LaserJet 4 can rotate internal fonts to print portrait fonts in
  139. landscape orientation; you do not need a landscape .PRD file to print
  140. in landscape orientation. However, you cannot combine portrait and
  141. landscape formats on the same page.
  142.  
  143. Autorotation
  144. ------------
  145.  
  146. Font autorotation printing is available on the HP LaserJet 4. The
  147. HPGL2 graphics resolution uses the Hewlett-Packard Graphics Language
  148. to draw vector graphics rather than bitmapped images. The HPGL2
  149. resolution can print most graphics more quickly than the standard
  150. bitmapped resolutions, although it requires more memory. HPGL2
  151. graphics print at 300 dots per inch (dpi).
  152.  
  153. Pattern and Shading
  154. -------------------
  155.  
  156. You can access the font pattern and font shading capability of the HP
  157. LaserJet 4 using the Colors box in the Format Character dialog box.
  158. Three font patterns and Dark, Medium, Light, and White font shading
  159. are available.
  160.  
  161. Line Drawing
  162. ------------
  163.  
  164. Lines drawn with the line draw feature of Word should be formatted
  165. with the CourierPC or Linedraw fonts to take full advantage of the
  166. line draw or Format Borders features.
  167.  
  168. Unprintable Regions
  169. -------------------
  170.  
  171. Like other laser printers, LaserJet printers do not print all the way
  172. to the edge of a page. The area around the edge of a page where the
  173. printer cannot print is called an unprintable region. The sizes of the
  174. unprintable region for the HP LaserJet 4 are included in the "Printer
  175. Specifications" section below.
  176.  
  177. In Word versions 4.0 and earlier, you have to adjust the margins and
  178. page length settings in the Format Margins command to accommodate
  179. unprintable regions. You do not have to do so in Word version 5.5. You
  180. should select the exact margins and page dimensions you want.
  181.  
  182. Paper Feed
  183. ----------
  184.  
  185. The Paper Feed box in the File Printer Setup dialog box should
  186. normally be set to Continuous. However, on the LaserJet 4 you can
  187. select different paper trays or an envelope feeder. If you select
  188. Mixed, the first page will feed from bin 1, and succeeding pages will
  189. feed from bin 2.
  190.  
  191. LaserJet Memory
  192. ---------------
  193.  
  194. Printing downloadable fonts and graphics can fill up your printer's
  195. memory. If that happens, the printer will present an error message,
  196. and your document will lose text or print incorrectly. If you're using
  197. downloadable fonts, you can use fewer fonts or smaller font sizes, or
  198. you can substitute cartridge fonts instead. To reduce the amount of
  199. memory a graphic requires, you can print the graphic at a lower
  200. resolution or make it smaller. You can also purchase additional memory
  201. for most LaserJet models.
  202.
